Importing a Yacht into Indonesia: Duties, CAIT & the Cruising Permit

Published by the Raja Ampat Yacht Broker Desk · Updated 19 August 2026

A yacht enters Indonesia either temporarily, under the cruising permit framework for foreign-flagged vessels, or permanently, through import with the duty and tax treatment that follows. Which path you take determines whether the vessel can be sold locally, chartered commercially, or kept indefinitely.

Two different journeys

Cruising through and staying are not variations of the same process. A foreign-flagged yacht visiting operates under a permission framework with defined conditions and duration. A vessel being brought in permanently is imported, with the duty and tax consequences that implies, and typically ends up Indonesian-flagged under a local owning entity.

Decisions to take before arrival

The most common expensive mistake

Bringing a yacht in temporarily, keeping it for years on rolling permissions, then attempting to sell it locally. At that point the duty position surfaces, the buyer’s lawyer asks the question the seller avoided, and the sale stops. Deciding the permanent route at the outset costs far less than unwinding it later.

Buying a yacht already in the country

Ask which route the vessel came in on and get documentary proof. A hull that has been in Indonesia for years without a clear import position is a liability wearing a nice paint job. This is a standard item on the diligence list in pre-purchase due diligence.

Verify current requirements

Customs treatment, cruising permission and the associated processes are administered by Indonesian authorities and change over time. Confirm the current position for your flag, vessel and itinerary rather than relying on any written guide, including this one. The ownership and flag decisions that sit alongside it are covered in registering a foreign yacht in Indonesia and the foreign buyer’s guide.
