Bareboat vs Crewed Charter in Indonesia: Rules and Reality

Published by the Raja Ampat Yacht Broker Desk · Updated 19 August 2026

Crewed charter is the norm in Indonesia. Bareboat exists but is limited, because most vessels are licensed, insured and certified to operate with professional crew, and because the cruising grounds demand local navigational knowledge. Assume crewed unless a specific vessel is documented otherwise.

Why crewed dominates here

Three reasons, and none of them is commercial preference. First, certification: many vessels carrying paying guests are certified on the basis that qualified crew are aboard. Second, insurance: cover is written around the operating profile, and a bareboat handover changes it. Third, geography: reef-strewn approaches, tidal streams and thin charting reward experience in a way that no briefing substitutes for.

What crewed charter gives you

Where bareboat can work

Smaller sailing yachts and catamarans in the more developed western cruising areas, with experienced charterers and a vessel specifically set up and permitted for it. Even then, many operators place a skipper aboard as a condition. In Raja Ampat specifically, treat bareboat as the exception, not the plan.

Owner’s perspective

If you own a yacht and are considering offering it bareboat, check three things before advertising: whether your certification supports it, whether your insurer will write it, and whether your maintenance model survives inexperienced handling. For most owners in this region, placing the vessel into crewed charter under a management contract produces better returns and materially less risk — see yacht and charter management.

Guest’s perspective

If what attracts you to bareboat is autonomy rather than cost, a private whole-vessel crewed charter delivers most of it. You choose the itinerary and the rhythm; someone else handles the anchor at three in the morning. Options and pricing logic are on Raja Ampat charter and the cost of a private phinisi week.
